Sprouts Farmers Market is coming to South St. Pete
/South St. Pete has long hoped for more grocery options. Most of the region is considered a food desert, an area that has limited access to affordable and nutritious food. Due to several factors, including average income and population density, it has been difficult to attract grocers to the region.
However, one national supermarket chain has recently decided to plant their flag in south St. Pete. Sprouts Farmers Market will be opening a 23,000-square-foot store in a new mixed-use development coming soon to the Skyway Marina District, giving residents of South St. Petersburg a much-needed source of fresh, healthy food.
Located at 3102 34th Street South, the project, first announced in May, will take the place of the Ceridian office complex.
The specialty grocery store will be part of Skyway Village, which, if approved, will bring 2,084 apartments and 92,000 square feet of commercial space to the area, up from 49,000 square feet of commercial space included in the original plan.
In addition to Sprouts, Skyway Village will feature numerous restaurants, boutiques, and bars offering a walkable, urban environment to residents and visitors alike. A food truck park is planned for the middle of the 34-acre development.
Altis Cardinal Skyline 2 LLC, an entity controlled by Coral Gables-based Altis Cardinal, acquired the site in December 2021 for $40 million. According to its proposal, the 380,000-square-foot Ceridian campus will mostly be demolished — the 125-foot Ceridian office tower is expected to remain and be transformed into a nine-story amenity tower — to make way for six five-story apartment buildings with individual parking garages, for a total of 3,572 parking spaces.
Sprouts will anchor the development’s central retail spine. The grocer has expanded rapidly in Florida over the past few years. It opened a new store in Bradenton on June 30, giving it 39 locations in the Sunshine State. In Pinellas County, it has stores in Clearwater, Palm Harbor, and Seminole, and one scheduled to open at 4571 66th Street North, Kenneth City, on August 18th, according to a statement from the company.
Headquartered in Phoenix, Sprouts, with 380 stores in 23 states and more than 31,000 employees, has become one of the biggest specialty grocery chains in the country. It’s known for the open layout of its stores, featuring fresh produce as the centerpiece. The company also stocks a wide range of organic, plant-based, and gluten-free foods.
In addition to Sprouts and other yet-to-be-announced commercial tenants, the Skyway Village development will also include 119,160 square feet of self-storage space.
Construction is expected to begin early next year.
