Dessert bar from owners of Mullet’s Fish Camp coming soon to south St. Pete
The owners of Mullet’s Fish Camp & Market, located at 3901 6th Street South, are opening a dessert bar at 3910 6th Street South, formerly the home of Coquina Meat Market, directly across the street from their seafood restaurant.
In an interview with St. Pete Rising, Brian Rose and Nick Brown said they wanted to expand their business because it’s in an underserved part of the city where families need more options for doing things together.
“We have a very kid-friendly restaurant,” Rose said. “We have families coming in constantly. ‘Let’s go get ice cream’ — that’s one of the most straightforward family functions.”
Rose and Brown said they considered adding ice cream and other desserts to the Mullet’s menu, but the property lacks the back-of-house space to do it properly.
“People are already going to be parking here,” Brown said. “So why not give them a space to get dessert afterward? Or maybe a place to grab a glass of wine or a beer while waiting for a table on a busy night?”
They haven’t yet decided on a name for the 2,000-square-foot dessert bar but said the “working title” is Mullet’s Too: Electric Boogaloo — a play on the title of the 1980s break-dancing movie “Breakin’ 2: Electric Boogaloo.”
Brown said, “We’re trying to go a little bit quirky.”
However, the menu at Mullet’s Too, if that’s what it winds up being called, will be straightforward, according to Rose and Brown. Ice cream will be featured prominently, along with milkshakes, specialty coffee, and other after-dinner treats.
“Nothing too crazy or off the wall,” Brown said. “I just want to serve a good, affordable malted milkshake. And there'll be some form of key lime pie, small cakes, and other single-portion desserts.”
The dessert bar will offer counter service only but there will be capacity for about 100 people, with both indoor and outdoor seating available. Rose and Brown said they also plan to offer beer and wine at Mullet’s Too, with wine being available for sale by the bottle.
The décor won’t be as “beachy” as Mullet’s Fish Camp & Market, according to Rose and Brown, who said they are leaning toward a “neon bohemian” look.
The duo are still in the process of securing an ice cream supplier but said they want to find a company that can make them a signature flavor to offer at the dessert bar. They might hire an in-house pastry chef but outsourcing production of pies and cakes is also an option.
“A lot of stuff is TBD right now,” Brown said. “We're just trying to get through permitting.”
An opening date for Mullets Too has not been set yet.
